A Legacy Built on the Land

Ilunda Cattle is a family-owned cattle breeding enterprise led by multi-generation breeders who are passionate about the art and science of producing superior livestock.

Our mission is simple yet profound: to breed "meat carrying machines" — animals that are structurally sound, productive, and built for performance. Every decision we make is guided by decades of on-the-ground experience, passed down through generations of passionate breeders.

We maintain strategic partnerships with top breeders within our chosen breed societies, ensuring access to the best genetics and the highest standards in the industry.

Our Breeds

Two Divisions. One Vision.

Ilunda Cattle operates across two carefully chosen breeding divisions, each selected for their exceptional meat qualities, adaptability, and performance in South African conditions.

The two divisions are as follows:

Stud breed of Limousin cattle (Waters Edge Limousins) and Ankole cattle
Commercial breed of Droughtmaster and Beefmaster cattle

Waters Edge Limousins is registered with the Limousin Cattle Breeders' Society of Southern Africa. It is a previous winner of a 4.5 star rating for the Completeness Award, awarded by the Livestock Registering Foundation (LRF) in 2025.

In September 2026 we commenced our diversification strategy and took our breeding venture to another level by diversifying into the majestic Ankole breed. Ilunda Cattle became a registered stud breeder with the Ankole Cattle Breeders Society of South Africa. We subsequently acquired our first Ankole cow (Hera), SA24 - 087, a prime heifer from Fire Sky Ankole at the Ntaba Nyoni Ankole and Friends Auction in October 2026. Hera is sired by 45” Dyambo Junior, a son of the legendary foundational Ankole breeding bull, 49 4/8” Dyambo.

Our stud breeding program, operating under the name Waters Edge Limousins, focuses on the Limousin — a breed renowned worldwide for its outstanding muscling, superior feed conversion, and exceptional carcass quality.

The Limousin is celebrated for producing lean, high-yielding beef with minimal fat cover, making it one of the most sought-after breeds by commercial producers and feedlots alike.

Ankole cattle – “Cattle of Kings”

The Ankole breed needs no introduction, as it is currently one of the most popular and in-demand cattle breeds in South Africa, based on its high-value niche offering.

While its distinctive horns are the first attraction, the Ankole breed offers way more than just visual appeal. The high value horns are multi-functional and also serve as “ heat regulators”.

Amongst others, the key characteristics that attracted us to the Ankole breed are: High fertility and maternal traits, heal tolerance, disease and parasite resistance, low maintenance grazing and general survival instincts.
